Photonics is key technology for smart factories
Sensor networks for smart industry (industry 4.0 / industrie 4.0) and smart infrastructure are getting more and more essential. Real time information from ‘the real world’ to support decision making and control of vital processes will be an integral part of business processes.

Photonics provides smart factories with optical fibres for high-speed, reliable data communication, fibre lasers for production and sensors for intelligent feedback. One of the most promising developments is the ‘smart laser’, that understand what material it processes, how the process develops and when it is finished. Smart lasers are highly flexible and can adapt to changes in the material, such as shape, reflectivity, thickness and orientation.

The ISN Conference consists of several workshops where endusers and suppliers will meet and discuss what is needed for Smart Industry and how photonics can support this.

Augmented reality beyond the wow-factor – Presented by John Schavemaker, twnkls | augmented reality

In his keynote John will show multiple applications with AR that companies today have in place that increase process efficiency, convince the end customer and are exceeding by far the status of “gimmick”.

For example: how did Otolift manage to use Augmented Reality and reduce its entire process from sale to installation from 38 days to 48 hours?

Exploring the Digital Twin concept for use in civil infrastructure – Presented by Joep Paulissen, TNO

Joep Paulissen

Exploring the Digital Twin concept for use in civil infrastructure – Presented by Joep Paulissen, TNO, at Intelligent Sensor Networks Conference, on January 18, 2019, at Rotterdam AHOY, The Netherlands.

In 2018 the TNO Unit Building, Infrastructure and Maritime initiated research activities into the use of the Digital Twin concept for civil infrastructure. With the aim of ‘Learning by Doing’ we selected a relevant case study within our context of assessing the reliability of bridge structures.

By connecting TNO knowledge on relevant IT techniques with our domain knowledge on steel bridges we created first relatively simple digital twin of a steel bridge deck susceptible to fatigue cracking. FIWARE, The Open Source Platform for our Smart Digital Future – Presented by Valentijn de Leeuw, 3IF

Valentijn de Leeuw

FIWARE, The Open Source Platform for our Smart Digital Future – Presented by Valentijn de Leeuw, Vice President ARC Advisory Group, Industrial Expert at 3IF.be, Belgium, at Intelligent Sensor Networks Conference, on January 18, 2019, at Rotterdam AHOY, The Netherlands.

Digitalization starts with digital representation of physical assets (buildings, factories, transport means, utilities, etc.) and the environment (weather, traffic, etc.) Activities in different sectors need to exchange information about those assets in a meaningful way. This requires information model or data model, which specifies with information is stored where, what its meaning and content is. Sensors and sensor networks for smart structures – Presented by Rob Jansen, TNO

Rob Jansen

Sensors and sensor networks for smart structures – Presented by Rob Jansen, TNO

An overview will be presented for two types of structures, an offshore wind turbine and a bridge, where innovative sensors are installed. The presentation will discuss what type of sensors are used, how they are connected to the sensor network (or sensor system) and what is done with the data being generated. From Intelligent (IoT) Sensor to Plant Reliability – Presented by Martin Blenkers, IJssel Technologie

Martin Blenkers

From Intelligent (IoT) Sensor to Plant Reliability – Presented by Martin Blenkers, IJssel Technologie, at Intelligent Sensor Networks Conference, on January 18, 2019, at Rotterdam AHOY, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

The way in which innovation, intelligence and plant awareness are at the center of reliability.

Interview
What drives you?
Our mission is simple, to provide a cost-effective means of managing all the key reliability elements without compromise on quality, plant awareness or integration. It’s mind blowing what you could do when you start to integrate reliability technologies like vibration, oil sensors, IR etc… with process related data. Practical IoT: focus on components – the systems will follow – Presented by Simon Jagers, Semiotic Labs BV, at the Intelligent Sensor Networks Conference, which will take place on January 18, 2019, at Rotterdam AHOY, The Netherlands.

Interview
What drives you?
Our mission is to eliminate unplanned downtime. In order to do that, we work with cutting edge technology. It’s simply awesome to apply algorithms in the physical world and see concrete results come alive.

What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
Long run: A.I., A.I., A.I., It really is changing the world. Quantum computing as #4. Cold fusion #5. Short run: AI, improved wireless communication, improved battery life.

What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
I believe technology will aide humans in bringing out the best in ourselves and each other. It will eliminate tradeoffs and scarcity. Continue reading “Practical IoT: focus on components – the systems will follow – Presented by Simon Jagers, Semiotic Labs BV”
