In 2018 the TNO Unit Building, Infrastructure and Maritime initiated research activities into the use of the Digital Twin concept for civil infrastructure. With the aim of ‘Learning by Doing’ we selected a relevant case study within our context of assessing the reliability of bridge structures.

By connecting TNO knowledge on relevant IT techniques with our domain knowledge on steel bridges we created first relatively simple digital twin of a steel bridge deck susceptible to fatigue cracking. What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
Long run: A.I., A.I., A.I., It really is changing the world. Quantum computing as #4. Cold fusion #5. Short run: AI, improved wireless communication, improved battery life.

What kind of impact do you expect them to have?

Some say virtual and augmented reality will be an integral part of our everyday lives within 10 years. But what does this market look like today? Is it hype or a business with real potential?

When clients and business partners ask me about the current state of the virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) markets, I usually draw the comparison with the Internet in 1995.

Back then – in the era of desktop computers and dial-in modems – it was hard to imagine where “this new Internet thing” would take us more than 20 years later. Industrial Control Systems (ICS) have become increasingly connected to enterprise IoT directives and placed under IT oversight. While industrial applications and sensors have historically remained secure due to their relative isolation from enterprise IT, this is no longer the case. Cybersecurity stakeholders are realizing that the conventional IT security practices of network segmentation, firewalls and SIEMs must be supplemented with technologies that bring real-time visibility and threat analysis to OT segments. In this session, we will cover how certain non-intrusive ICS technologies are bringing scalable visibility into distributed ICS networks and bridging the integration gap that exists between the IT / OT divide. We will examine real uses-case scenarios that illustrate the tactical implementation and benefit of cutting-edge ICS cybersecurity technologies within existing brownfield ICS / IT applications.
